At the heart of our food rescue efforts is a simple belief: food should not go to waste, especially when it has the power to nourish and uplift. Through our partnership with Loving Hands Children’s Home in the San Fernando Valley, we’ve found a creative and meaningful way to help our community beyond the clients we serve at the West Valley Food Pantry.
Each week, we carefully sort the groceries that we rescue from our local grocery partners. After the sorting is complete, we often have items that are no longer fit for human consumption, yet many of the fruits and vegetables are still good for animals. Some of those items are set aside for the Loving Hands team, who pick them up twice a week and feed them to the animals in their extraordinary animal sanctuary, which is part of Loving Hands’ therapeutic environment. From turkeys like Carmine and Penguin to a beloved 300-pound pig affectionately known as “Miss Mini,” the animals are more than just residents; they are companions, healers, and an essential part of the children’s emotional development.
Loving Hands Children’s Home provides a safe, nurturing environment for displaced and medically fragile children from birth to age 18 within the social services system. With a small, dedicated team caring for a maximum of six children at a time, the organization ensures each child receives individualized attention, stability, and love.
The property itself reflects the organization’s mission. Beyond the animal sanctuary, an edible forest, where ingredients like turmeric and cardamom are grown and harvested, supports their largely vegetarian lifestyle.
Even more inspiring, Loving Hands invests in long-term impact by hiring individuals who once lived in the home, creating a full-circle moment of growth and opportunity.
Our collaboration is a reminder that sustainability and compassion go hand in hand. By redirecting food waste to support Loving Hands’ animals, we’re not only reducing environmental impact, but we’re helping nurture a therapeutic space where children can heal, grow, and thrive.
We are proud to stand alongside Loving Hands in their mission. Together, we’re proving that with a little creativity and a lot of heart, even what might be discarded can become something truly life-changing.
