Organization Overview

West Valley Food Pantry (WVFP) works to alleviate hunger in the west San Fernando Valley. A partner agency of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, consistent support is received from committed elected officials, community leaders, generous donors, selfless volunteers, and employed staff. WVFP operates three efficient food programs: Senior Grocery Delivery, Walk-up Pantry Service, and Drive-thru Pantry Service. WVFP serves approximately 100,000 client visits for thousands of individuals in need of food assistance each year.  

Recognized as the California Small Non-Profit of the Year in 2020, WVFP is a program of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church that welcomes and supports all who need food assistance. The WVFP is located on the campus of the church at 5700 Rudnick Avenue, Woodland Hills, CA 91367. The Sorting and Bagging Coordinator is an employee of Prince of Peace; however, there is no requirement that the employee be affiliated with the Episcopal Church.

Position Overview

The Sorting and Bagging Coordinator supports daily West Valley Food Pantry operations by preparing the Pantry for service, assisting with volunteer supervision, ensuring food safety compliance, and helping maintain a smooth, respectful client experience. This role provides operational continuity during morning service hours and serves as backup support when the Manager, Walk-up Pantry Service is unavailable.

Core Responsibilities

Pantry Setup, Service & Breakdown

  • Prepare the Pantry for daily sorting and bagging processes, including table setup, food layout, and readiness of service areas.
  • Provide guidance, instructions, and support to AM shift volunteers.
  • Oversee Pantry breakdown and cleanup at the conclusion of the AM shift.
  • Maintain awareness of daily workflow and make adjustments to volunteer assignments as necessary to ensure operational flow during service.

Food Distribution & Inventory Oversight

  • Determine daily “fresh bag” food allotments for clients based on available inventory and established distribution guidelines.
  • Verify that all food meets expiration, storage, and handling safety requirements prior to distribution.
  • Monitor food levels during service and communicate shortages or adjustments as needed.
  • Be cognizant of not only current day food allotments but also food requirements for future days and plan out food distribution accordingly

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all tables and food-contact surfaces are cleaned and disinfected according to food safety standards.
  • Maintain familiarity with all Los Angeles Regional Food Bank rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a current Food Handler Certificate at all times.

Volunteer & Operational Support

  • Assist the Manager, Walk-up Pantry Service with daily Pantry operations, volunteer oversight, and food ordering as needed.
  • Serve as backup coverage during Manager, Walk-up Pantry Service absences, including vacation and sick time coverage.
  • Maintain working knowledge of all Pantry operations to assist or provide coverage in any service area during staffing shortages or emergencies.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Communicate observations, concerns, and recommendations to the Manager, Walk-up Pantry Service and Director of Operations when operational adjustments may be needed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, cooperation, and strong interpersonal skills in a fast-paced Pantry environment.
  • Treat clients, volunteers, and coworkers with respect and dignity in alignment with Pantry values.
  • Ensure all tables and food-contact surfaces are cleaned and disinfected according to food safety standards.
  • Maintain familiarity with all Los Angeles Regional Food Bank rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a current Food Handler Certificate at all times.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, or equivalent
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 40 pounds
  • Skilled in organizing and prioritizing work; able to take initiative and work autonomously to work independently with little supervision, and also as part of a team
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to multitask
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a fast-paced work environment and understand the importance of relationship-building among constituents
